7662 Telegraph Road

Let me tell you a secret: I was not keen of Moby (btw, I watched him live for first time last year, and it was ... not very impressive). But I came to find out he has a blog about Los Angeles architecture. A New Yorker writting about Los Angeles architecture? Bizarre but great! Awesome, indeed.

I am also very interested in Los Angeles Architecture (unfortunately I have to visit it virtually). Since we share a common interest, I start to like the guy. In fact, I like a lot what he is posting in his site. I agree with many of his point of views, and I enjoy his witty sense of humour.

BTW, the image of this post, may be in 7662 Telegraph Road, Commerce, Los Angeles? (Come on, Dire Straits fans: Telegraph Road? Wouldn't you be glad?)

The time I visited Los Angeles I stopped in at a cheap hotel in that address: nowadays the name is  Quality Inn & Suites:

Well, by the hotel swimming pool there is an amusing art:

Does not seem that similar from this view (it was still much bigger so maybe on another part of the garden it resembles Moby's picture)

The hotel  is not that great anyway, but it is very convenient since it is close to a tradicional diner: Ozzie's Diner.

10 Tips on Writing from David Ogilvy (as linked by felipe tofani)

Good writing is not a natural gift. You have to learn to write well. Here are 10 hints:

1. Read the Roman-Raphaelson book on writing. Read it three times.

2. Write the way you talk. Naturally.

3. Use short words, short sentences and short paragraphs.

4. Never use jargon words like reconceptualize, demassification, attitudinally, judgmentally. They are hallmarks of a pretentious ass.

5. Never write more than two pages on any subject.

6. Check your quotations.

7. Never send a letter or a memo on the day you write it. Read it aloud the next morning — and then edit it.

8. If it is something important, get a colleague to improve it.

9. Before you send your letter or your memo, make sure it is crystal clear what you want the recipient to do.

10. If you want ACTION, don’t write. Go and tell the guy what you want.

A great advice for anybody: if you have an company email account and you write more than 3 mails a day, a lot of your work depends on communicating correctly through writing. The best you are understood, the better you will do your job.
Unless your competence sucks: in that case write as poorly as you could, to confuse people and hopefully they won't find out how incompetent you are.

Vaia roubo!

FM is Evil?

Thanks but these two are nothing compare to what's going on fm radio. If you are not aware, fm processor is the most evil devise which humanity has invented speaking of compression. I'm not sure of it's processor particular order but it includes - 2 band leveler, stereo enhancer, phase shifter, multi-band compressor, multi-band limiter, HF emphasis, a final clipper. It's huge. It squeezes every sample from your masters.

Multiple Browser as a bad habit?

Firefox, I guess. I keep that, Safari, and Chrome running all the time...Safari is my blogging browser, Firefox is for development, and Chrome is for fun. Now that I think about it, using three browsers all the time sounds pretty ridiculous.

Funny I use different browsers as well: Opera is for fun, Chrome is for Office tools (GMail, GCalendar, GoogleDocs and so on), Firefox is for work, and Explorer is just for the many Intranet apps and Commercial Sowftware web interfaces that only work right on IE.

Glasgow, circa 1981

This is the start of the music you love or the music you hate. Nobody knows what did art school boys before, but this changed everything. Postcard Record did not lasted more than a couple of years and was not able to release a full album but it deserves a legendary place in history: Orange Juice, Aztec Camera, Joseph K and Go-Betweens... any better?

Postcard Records from esben on 8tracks.

Most of your favourite scottish acts: from Jesus & Mary Chain, to Teenage FanClub could be somehow related to this seminal scene.
In 1980, indiepop as we have come to know it did not exist yet. Someone had to invent it. Arguments can be made as to who actually did, but a strong case can be made for the handful of bands that emerged from Glasgow who the press (and leading label Postcard Recordings Of Scotland) glossed as “the Sound Of Young Scotland.” Inspired by the DIY ethos of punk, yet weaned on classic pop of all sorts—from the Byrds to the Velvet Underground to Chic and Motown—these bands threw it all into a blender and made it work: pop art imagery, soul music, classic balladry, a decidedly romantic lyrical bent, a slight absurdist streak, an almost willful ignorance to learn to play properly, and an undeniable sense of energy and enthusiasm for their craft. It might not have seemed like it at the time, as none of the bands really achieved any lasting chart success, but these bands changed the face of music forever. Led by Orange Juice, Josef K, Postcard, and a host of other players, the music still sounds fresh as a daisy today to these ears.

E ata unhas cantas sopresas desconcertantes/divertidas coma a do final.
